LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team secured a series sweep over Christian Brothers on Saturday, winning the first game 10-8 before completing the sweep with a 7-5 victory in Game 2 at Tartt Field.
West Alabama extended their winning streak to seven games on Saturday, marking the longest win streak in school history since 2019.
"The guys have been doing a good job of finding ways to win games," said head coach Eric DuBose. "It's something that we talk about daily, but we also understand that it's a long season and there's a lot of good teams in the conference and we haven't accomplished anything yet. We're excited about the streak that we are on but at the same time we realize that we have work still to do."
Game One: West Alabama 10, Christian Brothers 8
West Alabama powered past Christian Brothers in the opener behind a strong offensive performance and timely pitching. The Tigers jumped out early, responding to a first-inning solo homer by CBU's Cory Steinhauer with a three-run blast from
Nick Wilson, scoring
Joe Watkins and
Eli Burwash.
The Tigers extended their lead in the second, taking advantage of a CBU error and adding runs off a groundout by
Jake Goolsby and an RBI single from Wilson to go up 6-1. However, the Buccaneers rallied in the third, scoring six runs, including a three-run homer by Logan Croley, to take a 7-6 lead.
UWA quickly answered in the bottom of the frame with another three-run homer, this time from Goolsby, reclaiming the lead at 9-7.
Tanner Jones added a solo shot in the fourth to give the Tigers a 10-7 advantage. Christian Brothers managed one more run in the eighth on a balk, but
Nolan Phillips shut the door in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Jacob Marshall (2-2) picked up the win in relief, while Cameron Olivo (2-2) took the loss for CBU.
Game Two: West Alabama 7, Christian Brothers 5
The Tigers carried their momentum into the second game, striking first with a leadoff homer from Burwash in the opening inning. CBU responded in the second with a three-run shot from Seth Brown to take a 3-1 lead.
West Alabama answered back immediately in the bottom half, tying the game with a sacrifice fly from
Austin Thacker before Watkins launched a three-run homer to put the Tigers ahead 5-3. UWA added two more in the third on an RBI sacrifice fly from Moss and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
CBU chipped away with a run in the fourth on a wild pitch and a solo homer by Jalen Smith in the seventh, but
Gates Pee closed the door for his first save of the season.
Owen Hendry (1-1) earned the win after throwing 2.0 innings, only allowing one run and striking out three batters. Christian Brothers' Joseph Gibson (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
West Alabama (12-7, 7-2 GSC) will look to continue its winning ways on Tuesday, March 4, when they travel to Miles College for a 4 p.m. matchup. Christian Brothers (6-11, 1-8 GSC) will aim to bounce back in their next outing.
