LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team extended their win streak to nine on Friday, after sweeping their double header against the Union Bulldogs, winning Game One, 10-1 and Game Two, 3-0.
West Alabama (23-12, 12-8 GSC) got excellent starts out of Madison Wright and Eleanor De Block on Friday as the duo held Union (7-27, 5-16 GSC) to one run on seven hits through 14.0 innings to lead the Tigers to their dominant sweep over the Bulldogs.
GAME ONE: UWA 10, UU 1
Wright was in the circle for the Tigers in Game One and held Union off the board before UWA's offense gave the lefty the lead in the bottom of the second.Â
Taylor Clegg and Ella Watson reached base to begin West Alabama's side, bringing up Riley Sullivan who singled home Clegg to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Jessica Cross followed that up with an RBI-single of her own, making it a 2-0 game. Jessica Rose stepped into the batter's box next and brought Sullivan home courtesy of a safety squeeze before Trinity Hatcher put a cap on a four-run inning for West Alabama with an RBI-single that scored Haley Shannon.
Wright continued to roll on the mound, registering a 1-2-3 inning, bringing a hot UWA offense back to the dish in the third.
In the latter stages of the bottom of the third, Ella Watson reached on an error before Sullivan recorded her second RBI of the game with an RBI-triple that pushed Watson across.Â
Now working with a 5-0 lead, Wright pounded the zone in the fifth until an error from the Tigers led to Union pushing across their first run of the game. The senior brushed off the Bulldogs' run, responding by holding Union to just one hit over the next three innings.
Plate discipline was the name of the game for UWA in the bottom of the sixth as the Tigers drew three consecutive walks to load the bases for Hatcher. Hatcher drew a walk herself, scoring Cara Rankin and bringing Ann Marie Stanbridge to the plate. Stanbridge hit a towering Grand Slam to left field to end Game One in run-rule fashion for West Alabama.
Wright went 6.0 innings, striking out five while allowing three hits on zero earned runs.
GAME TWO: UWA 3, UU 0
Eleanor De Block received the ball for UWA in Game Two and proceeded to pitch a gem. The junior allowed a hit to begin the game but later rolled a double play ball to end the Bulldogs' side.
In the bottom half of the first, Hatcher hit her third Home Run of the season to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.Â
Through the next four innings, De Block carved through Union's lineup, registering five more strikeouts as the righty took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning.Â
Marissa Mitchell got the sixth inning started with an opposite field solo Home Run to extend West Alabama's lead to two before Sullivan put a stamp on her RBI filled day with a sacrifice fly that scored Clegg.
Now with three outs to secure the series, De Block produced a popup and two strikeouts to record her second complete game shutout of the year.
De Block finished with a line of 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 8 SO while Mitchell led the way offensively, going 3-3 with a homer.
West Alabama and Union will conclude their series on Saturday with first pitch set for 11:00 a.m.
