LIVINGSTON, Ala. – In their final home game of the season, West Alabama rallied behind a late offensive surge and overcame a lengthy weather delay to defeat Spring Hill College, 9-1, Tuesday evening at Tartt Field.
After trailing 1-0 early, the Tigers broke loose for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seize momentum.
Albert Hernandez gave UWA the lead with a two-RBI double to left, scoring
Thomas Watson and
Jake Goolsby.
Bryce Newman followed with an RBI double, and
Joe Watkins delivered the big blow with a two-run homer to right field, giving UWA a 5-1 advantage.
West Alabama (24-22) padded the lead with a sacrifice fly by Watson in the seventh and tacked on three more runs in the eighth. Watkins singled home another run, Vineyard drove in one with a base hit, and
Austin Thacker capped the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice.
Watkins went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Tigers, while Newman and Hernandez each added multi-hit performances. UWA out-hit Spring Hill 12-6 on the night.
The game featured an hour and 50-minute weather delay during the middle of the third inning, but the Tigers remained locked in following the pause.
Jack Hoppenjans (1-1) earned the win in relief, tossing a scoreless sixth inning as part of a strong effort from the UWA bullpen, which held the Badgers scoreless over the final five innings.
Spring Hill (34-11) scored its lone run on a wild pitch in the second inning and left 15 runners on base.
West Alabama now turns its focus to the final Gulf South Conference series of the regular season, traveling to Alabama-Huntsville for a three-game set. The Tigers open the series with a doubleheader on Friday, April 25 at 2 p.m. before closing the regular season with a single game on Saturday at noon at Charger Park.
