Women’s Tennis Advances to GSC Championship Match with 4-2 Win over Argonauts

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Women's Tennis team secured their spot in the GSC Championship with a 4-2 win over the West Florida Argonauts on Friday.

"This is a great win," said head coach Jeff Beaman. "West Florida is a tough team that really pushed us. This match could've gone either way but the women really stepped up."

West Alabama (16-5, 8-0 GSC) came out of the gates fast, securing the doubles point after Shaira Rivera/Valentina Mutilba and Lolita Hukasian/Greta Zawels picked up a pair of dominant wins. Rivera/Mutilba won 6-3 in Line One while the tandem of Hukasian/Zawels recorded a 6-2 victory in Line Three.

In singles play, Alexa Milliam throughly dominated UWF's Sandra Recuenco Tarin as the freshman registered a flawless (6-0, 6-0) result. Now leading 2-0, West Florida picked up a pair of wins on Lines Three and Four before Shaira Rivera put the Tigers back in the lead with a (7-5, 6-2) victory in Line One.

With the match hanging in the balance, Zawels and Hukasian both found themselves in three-set battles until Zawels clinched it for UWA with a (6-4, 1-6, 6-2) over Luiza Daud in Line Six.

"Now it's time to get ready for another battle tomorrow," Beaman closed.

West Alabama will rematch Mississippi College in the GSC Championship on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Alabama.
