Baseball Sweeps Chargers to Clinch Spot in GSC Tournament

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama baseball team wrapped up its regular season on a high note, winning both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Alabama Huntsville at Charger Park.

The Tigers finished the season 27-22 overall and 18-15 in Gulf South Conference play, clinching their spot in the GSC Tournament.

In a thrilling 14-inning opener, West Alabama pulled away late to earn an 8-1 victory. Eli Burwash's sacrifice fly in the fifth gave UWA an early lead, but UAH tied it in the seventh. After a tense scoreless stretch, the Tigers exploded for seven runs in the 14th inning. Burwash singled in the go-ahead run, followed by a double from Blake Vineyard and a grand slam by Jake Goolsby to break the game open. Owen Hendry picked up the win on the mound, tossing a scoreless 13th inning before UWA sealed the win in the 14th.

Game two was a pitchers' duel, with neither side scoring through the first six innings. West Alabama finally broke through in the top of the seventh when Nick Wilson scored on a wild pitch. Drew Cartee earned the win in relief, and Gates Pee notched the save after closing out the seventh inning, securing the 1-0 victory and the sweep.

West Alabama's series win was boosted by a forfeit victory awarded on Friday after it was determined UAH violated GSC roster policies prior to the series.

The Tigers now turn their attention to the GSC Tournament, with their opponent to be determined on Sunday, April 27.
