HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball Team split their Saturday double header against Alabama Huntsville to conclude the regular season.
West Alabama (30-17, 19-13 GSC)Â began the series against Alabama Huntsville (27-20, 19-12 GSC) with a 7-6 win in Game Two, before falling in Game Three, 6-2, to end the regular season with a 30-17 overall record.
GAME TWO: UWA 7, UAH 6
Madison Wright got the ball for the Tigers in Game One and pitched her 22nd complete game of the year.
The Chargers took an early lead on Wright and UWA as UAH's leading hitter, Maddie Cartron, registered an RBI-double to put West Alabama behind, 1-0. The Tigers responded in the second inning with Ann Marie Stanbridge and Ella Watson both being hit by pitches to begin the inning. Two batters later, Jessica Rose singled home Stanbridge to knot the game at one.
Now tied at one, Wright retired the Chargers' side in order, bringing her offense back up to the plate where they gave the senior the lead in the third. Back-to-back leadoff singles from Trinity Hatcher and Marissa Mitchell put UWA in business. Moments later, both advanced on a passed ball, leading to Stanbridge laying down a bunt to drive in Hatcher via a safety squeeze. A batter later, Mitchell stole home to give West Alabama a 3-1 lead.
Alabama Huntsville got a run back in the bottom half of the third as Jada Henderson recorded an RBI-single, but that's all they would get in the inning as UWA took a 3-2 lead into the fourth.
The Tigers put up a three spot in the fourth inning as Olivia McClain Payne got things started with a one out walk. Haley Shannon came to the plate next and drove home Payne with an RBI-Triple before Hatcher scored Shannon via a safety squeeze. West Alabama wasn't done in the inning as they loaded up the bases, bringing up Ella Watson who drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 6-2 game.Â
UAH added two runs in the fifth inning, with Alexa Douthitt and Kinley Adams picking up RBIs. Shannon responded for UWA in the bottom half. The sophomore recorded her second RBI of the day, driving in Jessica Rose with a safety squeeze.Â
Now leading 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Wright and the Tigers struggled to put the Chargers away. Alabama Huntsville put up a two spot in their side of the fifth as Cartron and Sadie Thompson picked up RBIs to make it a one-run game.Â
In the final two innings, West Alabama couldn't add any insurance runs but they wouldn't need it. In the seventh, Alabama Huntsville had a runner on third with one out before Wright produced a fly out, in which Brittany Slaten tried to score off of. From her Center Field position, Watson threw Slaten out at home to clinch the game for the Tigers.
Shannon led the way with two RBIs while Rose recorded two hits.Â
GAME THREE: UAH 6, UWA 2
Eleanor De Block got the start in the series finale and found herself in the lead early. In the top of the first, Mitchell launched her team-high 15th Home Run of the year to put West Alabama out in front, 1-0.
De Block dealt with control issues in the bottom of the first as the junior walked two batter while an UWA error loaded up the bases. UAH capitalized on their RBI opportunities, scoring four runs in the inning to put the Tigers in a 4-1 hole.
Through the next couple of innings, Alabama Huntsville added two runs to their lead, making it a five-run game in the fourth.
The score would remain the same until West Alabama cut their deficit in the sixth. Mitchell began the inning with a leadoff walk, before being driven home by an RBI-double from Stanbridge. Stanbridge's RBI-double would be the final hit of the day for the Tigers as they fell, 6-2 in the series finale.
UWA is set to for their GSC Tournament run which is slated to begin on Wednesday, April 30 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.
