OXFORD, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team lost their opening round matchup to Mississippi College, 4-1, on Wednesday.
No. 6 West Alabama (30-18) struggled at the plate, recording just two hits on the day, leading to their two-run loss to Mississippi College (35-15).
Madison Wright got the ball on Wednesday and found herself with a lead before she took the mound. In the top of the first, Trinity Hatcher worked a walk and later scored off a Mississippi College error to put the Tigers up, 1-0.Â
The Choctaws quickly responded in the bottom half as Madelyn England hit a solo Home Run to tie the game at one.
After surrendering the game-tying Home Run to England, Wright settled down and proceeded to retire 10 of her next 12 batters. With Wright now in a groove, the UWA offense couldn't get much going until the top of the fourth. Ann Marie Stanbridge and Ella Watson reached base to begin the inning before a strikeout and a controversial double play retired UWA's side.Â
An inning later, MC broke the ice and took a two-run lead after a two-run double from England which stood as her third RBI of the day.Â
The Choctaws tagged on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, putting West Alabama in a 4-1 hole as we entered the final frame.Â
To begin the seventh, Riley Sullivan ripped a ball to left field that was miss played by the Left Fielder, leading to Sullivan advancing all the way to third. Jessica Rose came up to the plate next and drove Sullivan in via a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run game. A couple batters later, the Tigers found themselves down to their last out with Haley Shannon due up. Shannon singled to left to bring Hatcher to the plate who just missed a two-run game-tying Home Run as she belted the ball to right field that was caught on the warning track.
West Alabama will play the loser of West Florida/Montevallo on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with a chance to keep their season alive.
