LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team split their Saturday double header against the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans, losing Game Two, 3-2, while wrapping up the series with a 12-2 run-rule win in Game Three.
Runners left on base was the story for West Alabama (25-13, 14-10 GSC) in their 11-inning Game Two loss. The Tigers recorded 11 hits but only scored two runs, leaving 11 runners stranded. UWA flipped the script in Game Three as they pushed 12 runs across on nine hits, cashing in on majority of their RBI opportunities to secure a 10-run win in five innings to wrap up the weekend against Trevecca Nazarene (22-13, 11-13 GSC).
GAME TWO: TNU 3, UWA 2
Eleanor De Block got the ball to begin the day and pitched a marvelous game, going 10.2 innings with seven strikeouts while allowing one earned run on seven hits.Â
De Block breezed through the first three inning, surrendering just one hit. The junior right hander ran into a little bit of trouble in the fourth as the Trojans put runners on second and third with two outs. In a pressure situation, De Block got Zoe Lawrence to fly out to conclude the inning.Â
While the Tigers' right hander continued to deal in the circle, the UWA offense struggled to manufacture run support as the game progressed to the seventh, tied at 0-0.Â
West Alabama broke the ice in the seventh as La'taviona Parke registered an RBI-double that scored Sara Fargo to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0.
De Block was three outs away from a complete game shutout in the bottom of the seventh until Maddie Poschke hit a game-tying solo Home Run. Poschke's Home Run led to extra innings where she won it in the 11th for TNU to clinch the series for the Trojans.
GAME THREE: UWA 12, TNU 2
In Game Three, the Tigers were on the hunt early as they forced Trevecca Nazarene to make a move to the bullpen before their starter, Rylee Vernon, recorded an out. Trinity Hatcher and Ann Marie Stanbridge began the game with singles, bringing up Mitchell who registered a two-run single. Taylor Clegg followed Mitchell's two-run single with an RBI-double until West Alabama extended their lead to five with a Jessica Rose safety squeeze and Ella Watson scoring off a wild pitch.
Working with run support early, Game Three starter, Madison Wright, went to work in the bottom half of the inning as she retired Trevecca Nazarene's side in order to bring UWA's bats back up to the dish.
In the second, Hatcher drew a leadoff walk and later stole second, before scoring on a TNU error to extend the Tigers lead to 6-0. Wright followed that up with more masterful work in the circle and was awarded two more runs of support in the top of the third courtesy of a two-run double from Stanbridge.Â
Wright kept TNU off the board until the fourth inning when Madison Pruitt and Sarah Nicholson both collected RBIs to make it an 8-2 game.Â
After the Trojans got on the board in top of the fourth, the Tigers responded with three runs in the top of the fifth. Stanbridge registered another RBI on the day, by driving in Fargo via a sac fly before Mitchell hit her second home run of the series and 12th of the season. Mitchell's homer was a three-run shot that propelled UWA to a 12-2 lead which they would take into the fifth as Wright recorded the final three outs to secure a 12-2 win in the series finale.
Mitchell recorded a season-high five RBIs while Hatcher reached base four times and Stanbridge, Clegg, and Fargo all collected multi hit games.Â
West Alabama will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Pensacola, Florida for a three-game series against West Florida.Â
