Tigers Eliminate Choctaws, Fall to Falcons to Force Winner Take All Championship Game

OXFORD, Ala. - After an explosive comeback win against Mississippi College to eliminate the Choctaws, West Alabama's baseball team couldn't hold off Montevallo in the nightcap, falling 15-3 in the second game of the day to set up a decisive winner-take-all Gulf South Conference Championship matchup on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Choccolocco Park.

The Tigers (31-23), the tournament's No. 5 seed, opened Tuesday with a gutsy 12-6 win over No. 4 Mississippi College that knocked the Choctaws out of the tournament. West Alabama trailed 6-4 entering the seventh but stormed back with three runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth, riding a 15-hit attack and a clutch relief effort from Jacob Marshall (4-1), who earned the win.

Nick Wilson led the way with a 3-for-4 effort, tallying three RBIs and two runs scored, including a key go-ahead double in the seventh. Ryan Fletcher added three hits and three RBIs, and Joe Watkins crushed a two-run homer in the fifth that brought the Tigers back into the game.

That win handed UWA a shot at the GSC title in game two, needing one more victory to close out an undefeated run through the tournament. However, eighth-seeded Montevallo (29-24) had other plans.

The Falcons jumped on the Tigers early and often, scoring in six of the game's eight innings and racking up 17 hits in a 15-3 win that snapped UWA's 12-game winning streak. West Alabama held a 3-2 lead through three innings, but Montevallo erupted for 13 unanswered runs, including back-to-back home runs in the fourth and a six-run eighth to put the game out of reach.

Jack Hoppenjans (1-2) took the loss, while Adiel Melendez (10-5) earned the win for Montevallo. The Tigers were limited to just seven hits and failed to score after the third inning.

With both teams now carrying one loss in the double-elimination tournament, the stage is set for a winner-takes-all finale between Montevallo and West Alabama on Wednesday, May 7, at 2 p.m., with the 2025 Gulf South Conference Championship on the line.
