Tigers Battle to Scoreless Draw Against Lakers in Home Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team controlled much of the match but was unable to find the breakthrough, settling for a 0-0 draw against Clayton State on Friday evening at the UWA Track and Soccer Complex.

The Tigers (2-0-1) outshot the Lakers 21-7, including a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, but Clayton State goalkeeper Rubie Kelley and second-half keeper Claire Smith combined for six saves to keep the match level. UWA had several close chances, with Bailee Fairley and Selis Demirci testing the Clayton State defense early and Mikaela Carpino nearly scoring in the 45th minute, but each effort was turned away.

Freshman goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez continued her strong start to the season, recording five saves while posting her third straight shutout. Defensively, the Tigers kept Clayton State from gaining rhythm, allowing only three second-half shots on goal.

Two yellow cards were issued to UWA in the second half, with Aynzlie Nelson and Carpino each booked in the 68th and 80th minutes, respectively, but the Tigers remained organized to preserve the clean sheet.

West Alabama now shifts its attention to its first road test of the season, traveling to Greeneville, Tenn., to face Tusculum on Sunday, September 14, at 1 p.m.
