GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team remained unbeaten on the season after earning a 2-0 win over Tusculum on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
The Tigers (3-0-1) grabbed the lead in the 34th minute when Bailee Fairley scored her second goal of the season. Aileen Charles and Jade Arruda combined to set up the play, with Charles delivering a long pass that Arruda crossed into the box, where Fairley finished to the low left past the keeper.
UWA doubled its advantage in the 60th minute as Selis Demirci buried her second goal of the year. The forward pounced on a loose ball 20 yards out and struck a one-time shot through traffic that found the back of the net.
Tusculum (2-2) finished with a 10-7 edge in total shots, but goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez made four saves to secure her fourth clean sheet of the season. West Alabama held firm defensively despite seeing Tusculum create more chances in the second half, with Hernandez recording three of her stops after the break.
Mikaela Carpino and Talitha Hines were each shown yellow cards in the second half, but the Tigers stayed disciplined to see out the shutout victory.
West Alabama now turns its attention to Gulf South Conference play, opening league action on Friday, September 19, at 5 p.m. when they host Trevecca Nazarene at the UWA Soccer Field.
