Charles Nets First Goal, But Tigers Fall 2-1 to Flames

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team dropped its first Gulf South Conference home match of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 2-1 to Lee University at the UWA Soccer Field.

Lee struck first in the 16th minute when Alaysia Nye converted off an assist from Avery Sides. The Flames doubled their advantage before halftime, with Maci Ritzman scoring in the 43rd minute to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the break.

The Tigers clawed back in the second half, creating more opportunities and finding a breakthrough in the 79th minute. Senior Aileen Charles scored her first career goal, assisted by Emily Djagbare, to cut the deficit in half. Despite several late pushes, UWA couldn't find the equalizer.

West Alabama was narrowly outshot 15-11 but held Lee to just three shots on target. Goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez recorded one save in the match, while UWA finished with four corner kicks to Lee's five.

With the loss, UWA moves to 3-1-2 overall and 0-1-1 in GSC play. Lee improves to 3-1-1 on the year and 1-1-0 in the conference.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, September 24, traveling to Montevallo for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
