WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The University of West Alabama men's soccer team fell in its 2025 season opener Thursday night, dropping a 4-1 decision to Palm Beach Atlantic at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
The Sailfish struck first in the 17th minute when Rufus Roth finished off a setup from Livio Von Holzen. The Tigers responded with an equalizer in the 32nd minute, as senior forward
David Nunez buried his first goal of the season to bring the match level at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Palm Beach Atlantic pulled away in the second half with three unanswered goals. Juan Hermoso converted in the 65th minute, followed by strikes from Veit Klement (70') and Yassir Smlali (73'), sealing the 4-1 result for the home side.
Charlie Walker made several key saves in net for UWA, while Nunez and
Jamie Tomlinson generated scoring chances to keep the Tigers competitive through much of the opening frame.
West Alabama moves to 0-1-0 on the season and will remain in Florida for its next match. The Tigers take on Lynn University on Saturday, September 6, with kickoff scheduled for 11 a.m.
