OWENSBORO, Ky. – The University of West Alabama women's soccer team kept its perfect start alive with a commanding 3-0 victory over Illinois Springfield on Sunday afternoon at Panther Field, hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan.
"Proud of the team for the way we competed all weekend," said head coach Sam Wilson. "We hope to keep the momentum going as we continue to prepare for the start of GSC play"
The Tigers (2-0-0) opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Selis Demirci netted her first goal of the season, finishing off a setup from Summer Fox. UWA carried that 1-0 lead into halftime behind a strong defensive effort and two first-half saves from goalkeeper Yumari Hernandez.
Just moments into the second half, UWA doubled its advantage. Tiana Trahan capitalized on an opportunity in the 47th minute, extending the Tigers' lead to 2-0. The offense kept the pressure on, and in the 68th minute, Emily Callahan sealed the match with her first goal of the season to make it 3-0.
Illinois Springfield (0-1-1) managed six shots, three of which were on frame, but Hernandez stood tall to collect three saves and preserve the clean sheet. West Alabama outshot the Prairie Stars 12-6 overall, including a 7-3 edge in shots on target.
The Tigers return to action on Friday, Sept. 13, against Clayton State in their home opener at UWA Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
