LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama Women's Basketball team defeated the West Florida Argonauts (11-6, 8-4 Gulf South), 66-62, at Pruitt Hall to secure their sixth conference win of the year.
UWA (8-8, 6-6 GSC) dominated the boards with a 56-37 rebounding advantage, contributing to 23 second-chance points to lead them to their four-point win over UWF (11-6, 8-4 GSC).
West Florida and West Alabama exchanged leads four times in a tight first quarter. The Argonauts' advantage stemmed from converting two three-pointers and a sight advantage on the glass with 11 rebounds, compared to the Tigers' eight. Despite committing seven turnovers, UWA managed to keep the game close by scoring 12 points in the paint and forcing seven turnovers from West Florida. After the first quarter, West Florida led 17-13.
West Alabama outscored the Argonauts 12-9 in the second quarter by capitalizing on second-chance opportunities, tallying nine points off offensive rebounds. The Tigers also showcased defensive strength with three blocks, limiting West Florida's shooting to 25 percent for the quarter. A late three-pointer with four seconds remaining brought UWA within one point, ending the half with a narrow 26-25 deficit.
West Alabama and West Florida traded leads four times in a tightly contested third quarter, with UWF narrowly outscoring the Tigers, 18-17. UWA capitalized on second-chance opportunities, securing seven offensive rebounds that led to eight points. Despite this, West Florida's efficient free throw shooting, converting six of nine attempts, kept them slightly ahead. At the end of the quarter, West Florida led 44-42.
West Alabama capitalized on their opportunities from the free-throw line, converting 11 of 18 attempts, to secure a 24-18 advantage in the fourth quarter against West Florida. Their dominance on the boards was also apparent, out-rebounding the visitors 18-11, which included six offensive rebounds that led to crucial second-chance points. The Argonauts struggled from beyond the arc, failing to make any three-pointers on seven attempts, which hindered their ability to close the gap as the Tigers went on to win, 66-62.
Haley Nichols scored 22 points and collected 13 rebounds, leading the team in both categories.
Chardai Watkins added 14 points, converting 10 of 11 free throws and posting two blocks.
Nailah Mayes recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, contributing significantly to the team's efforts.
Callie Cowan scored 10 points and recorded two steals, while also contributing six rebounds.
West Alabama will conclude the weekend on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. matchup against Valdosta State.
