COLUMBUS, Ga. – The University of West Alabama baseball team opened the 2026 season with a strong performance on the road Friday afternoon, earning a 4–2 victory over Columbus State at Ragsdale Field.
The Tigers shook off an early deficit and used a three-run fourth inning along with a steady effort on the mound to secure the season-opening win. UWA (1-0, 0-0 GSC) collected 10 hits on the day and held the Cougars (0-1, 0-0 PBC) to just two runs, one of which was unearned.
Columbus State struck first in the bottom of the opening inning after a leadoff single and an error allowed a runner to reach third. A sacrifice fly plated the game's first run to give CSU a 1–0 lead.
West Alabama responded in the fourth inning. Rashad Robinson led off the frame with a double down the left-field line and later came home on an RBI single by Hudson Walburn to tie the game. The Tigers weren't finished, as Hayes Alford followed with a single before Austin Thacker delivered a two-run single into left-center, scoring Walburn and Aaron Wallace to give UWA a 3–1 advantage.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Robinson singled, stole second, and eventually scored on another RBI single from Walburn, extending the lead to 4–1.
On the mound, Baker Green made the start and worked the first two innings, allowing one unearned run. Thomas Kerby (1-0) was dominant in relief, tossing 6.1 innings while allowing just one run on four hits to earn the win. Kerby faced the minimum in several innings and kept the Cougars off balance throughout his outing.
Columbus State threatened in the ninth inning, pushing across a run on an RBI single by Matthew Cruz, but Camden Diamond entered out of the bullpen and closed the door, recording the final out to earn his first save of the season.
Robinson finished the day 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Walburn went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Wallace also posted a two-hit performance, and Thacker drove in two runs as part of the decisive fourth inning.
