LIVINGSTON, Ala. — West Alabama (5-6, 3-5 GSC) fell to Union (10-5, 5-2 GSC), 86–65, on Sunday at Pruitt Hall, despite holding a 46–36 advantage in points in the paint. Union converted 23 Tiger turnovers into 22 points to pull away late.
The Tigers leaned on their inside game early, with Callie Cowan providing strong finishes around the basket to keep the contest close. Union used perimeter shooting to take a 22–16 lead after the first quarter.
West Alabama continued to battle in the second quarter, sparked by a fast-break layup from Shay Hunter and five points from Haley Nichols, including a three-point play. The Tigers matched Union's scoring in the period and trailed just 40–34 at halftime.
The Tigers kept pressure on Union in the third quarter, scoring 16 points in the paint as Cowan and Nichols combined to cut into the deficit. West Alabama matched Union point-for-point in the period, but the Bulldogs carried a 61–55 lead into the fourth.
Union pulled away in the final quarter, capitalizing on turnovers and timely shooting to secure the 86–65 decision.
The Tigers return to action on the road this week, traveling to Montgomery to face the AUM Warhawks on Jan. 8th then to Montevallo to face the Falcons on Jan. 10th.
