LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men's soccer team earned two Gulf South Conference weekly honors as graduate defender Mathias Ibanez was named GSC Defensive Player of the Week and freshman forward Daniele Ciarlesi earned GSC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
The honors follow a strong week for the Tigers, who earned a 2-2 draw against AUM on October 7 before closing the week with a dominant 4-0 victory over Union University on October 11.
Ibanez helped anchor the Tigers' defensive effort during the two-match stretch while also contributing offensively. Against AUM, the graduate defender played 90 minutes and scored a goal as West Alabama earned a 2-2 draw.
Ibanez followed that performance by playing 82 minutes in the Tigers' 4-0 shutout victory over Union. He recorded an assist on Jesper Bakli's opening goal in the 18th minute, helping West Alabama take an early lead in a match the Tigers controlled from start to finish.
West Alabama limited Union to just six shots and held the Bulldogs without a shot on goal. The Tigers finished with 11 shots on target and earned their fourth win of the season.
Ciarlesi claimed GSC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after making an impact in the Tigers' victory over Union.
The freshman forward recorded a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win. Ciarlesi assisted on Aidan Riley's goal in the 82nd minute before scoring himself just over a minute later, finishing a pass from Riley to extend the Tigers' lead to 4-0.
Ciarlesi's two-point performance against Union continued a productive debut season for the freshman. Through the two matches, he recorded one goal and one assist against the Bulldogs after appearing in both contests during the week.
The Tigers return home on Wednesday, October 14, to face the Montevallo Falcons in their final home match of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the UWA Soccer Field.
