HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama volleyball team closed its weekend road trip Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Alabama Huntsville inside Spragins Hall.
The Chargers took the match by scores of 28-26, 25-13 and 25-23, handing West Alabama just its second loss of the season. The Tigers move to 18-2 overall and 6-1 in Gulf South Conference play.
West Alabama battled through a back-and-forth opening set that needed extra points to decide. The Tigers fought off pressure late and used kills from Klára Bobánová and
Katerina Korre to pull even at 24-24 before Korre put UWA in front, 25-24. UAH answered, however, eventually closing the frame with consecutive points for the 28-26 victory.
The Chargers carried the momentum into the second set. UAH used a strong stretch from the service line to build separation, including five aces in the frame, and took a 2-0 match advantage with a 25-13 win.
West Alabama responded with a much stronger effort in the third. After trailing 20-16, the Tigers worked their way back into the set behind kills from Korre,
Jazlyn Snow and
Duru Seber. Korre tied the score at 22-22, and UWA later pulled even again at 23 before UAH scored the final two points to finish the match, 25-23.
Korre led the West Alabama attack with 15 kills while hitting .412, committing just one error on 34 swings. Snow added eight kills on a .400 hitting percentage and contributed four block assists, while Bobánová finished with seven kills. Seber recorded five kills and was involved in three blocks.
Rachele Zanini directed the offense with 27 assists, while
Bailey Keef anchored the back row with a match-high 22 digs.
Ola Winiarek added 19 digs, giving the Tigers two players with at least 19.
As a team, West Alabama finished with 38 kills, 66 digs and seven total blocks while hitting .160. UAH totaled 44 kills, eight service aces and 10 blocks while hitting .201.
The Tigers will look to bounce back Monday, Oct. 6, when they travel to Fairfield, Alabama, for a nonconference matchup against Miles College. First serve from Knox-Windham Gymnasium is scheduled for 6 p.m.
