Men’s Soccer Feature Story: Tigers Head into Postseason with Confidence and Momentum

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The UWA men's soccer team enters the postseason with one goal in mind: win three games against the Gulf South Conference's best teams and earn a ticket to the national championships.

The Tigers, who finished sixth in the conference, begin their playoff journey this Saturday at 2 p.m. on the road against third-seeded UAH.

With the regular season now behind them, the Tigers are heading into the postseason with renewed confidence after a remarkable turnaround.

Following a difficult start to the year, West Alabama showed its talent and resilience in the second half of the season, establishing itself as one of the conference's strongest teams.

"Something Just Clicked"
Head coach Ross Nelson reflected on a season that has been a tale of two halves.

"The beginning of the season was a bit unusual, and our results didn't really reflect the level of our team. We dropped points because of small details, but I was never worried. I knew the results would come."

Through their first seven games, the Tigers had managed just one victory while suffering five defeats.
Then came a turning point.

West Alabama hosted Harding University and delivered a dominant 8-2 victory, a performance that gave the team a much-needed confidence boost and sparked a completely different run of form.

The Tigers went on to lose just once in their final eight games of the regular season.

"Something just clicked, and we started winning," Nelson said. "We had some really close games where we showed a lot of resilience. After the difficult start we had, it would have been easy to give up, and a lot of teams would have. But we showed that we were one of the best teams in the conference."

Team captain Oisin Griffin shared a similar perspective, pointing to the time it took for a young squad to find its identity.

"We have a young team with a lot of new players. We had a lot of losses early on, but we had the players and the talent. We just needed time to really come together as a group.

Yes, it was a difficult start, but I wasn't worried. There were moments during games when I could see the quality of our play, and those moments showed me that the potential was there."

For freshman center back Mathias Ibanez, the team's late-game victories have been particularly memorable and have helped transform the atmosphere inside the locker room.

"The games we managed to win late were really special. They showed us that we were a good team, and you can definitely feel the difference in the locker room since then. The further we go, the more I realize that we can be one of the best teams in the conference."

Ready for the Challenge
"We want to play to win, but we also want to play beautiful soccer. I'm convinced we can beat any team."  Head Coach Ross Nelson

With their postseason opener against UAH approaching, the Tigers have every reason to believe in themselves.
Their recent performances have highlighted the strength of their defense, the effectiveness of their attacking play and, above all, their ability to turn games around when the pressure is on.

Standing in their way are the Chargers, a team known for its direct style of play. West Alabama will need to remain focused from the opening whistle to the final seconds if it hopes to take another step toward the national championships.

But after overcoming a challenging start, finding their rhythm and proving they can compete with the conference's best, the Tigers are heading into the playoffs with something they have worked all season to build: confidence.
Now, it's time to put it to the test
