JACKSON, Tenn. — The University of West Alabama Women's Basketball team fell to Union University, 104-76, on Thursday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
West Alabama (10-11, 8-10 GSC) got off to a slow start and were outscored by Union (17-8, 12-5 GSC), 39-12, in the first quarter. UWA fought back and made it a five-point game in the third quarter but could never tie or take the lead. Union hit 19 threes and forced West Alabama into 28 turnovers, leading to the 28-point disparity.
The Bulldogs dominated the first quarter by capitalizing on 13 turnovers by the Tigers. Union's fast break proficiency was evident, contributing 15 points and leading to quick scoring transitions. West Alabama struggled offensively, converting only five baskets and failing to make a three-pointer, while Union's defense forced six steals. At the end of the quarter, Union led 39-12.
UWA capitalized on efficient shooting in the second quarter, converting 11 of 14 shot attempts, including two three-pointers, to outscore the Bulldogs 26-19. The Tigers dominated the paint with 12 points and maintained control on the boards with 11 total rebounds, 10 of which were defensive. Despite committing seven turnovers, West Alabama's offensive efficiency allowed them to win the second quarter, 26-19, but they still trailed by 20 at the half.
The Tigers mounted a strong offensive effort in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs, 27-19, by dominating the paint with 16 points and capitalizing on turnovers for seven points. This surge was aided by converting three of four three-point attempts and executing fast breaks for eight points. Union struggled to match this intensity, shooting 39% from the field and committing three turnovers. At the end of the quarter, Union led 77-65.
The fourth quarter mirrored the first quarter as the Bulldogs dominated all 10 minutes. Union outscored UWA, 27-11, and went on to win 104-76.
West Alabama will end the week on Saturday with a matchup against Christian Brothers.
