No. 25 Tigers Complete Series Sweep with 2-1 victory over Choctaws

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – No. 25 West Alabama capped off a perfect weekend at Tartt Field on Saturday afternoon, defeating Mississippi College 2-1 to complete the three-game Gulf South Conference sweep. The Tigers improve to 10-0 on the season with the win.

In a tightly contested pitcher's duel, West Alabama struck early and relied on a strong collective effort on the mound to secure the victory.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Wayne Wilkerson ripped a double to right center, driving in Hayes Alford for a 1-0 lead. UWA added what proved to be the game-winning run in the third. After Hudson Walburn singled and Nick Wilson followed with a base hit. Alford delivered an RBI single to right field to plate Walburn and extend the advantage to 2-0.

Blake Westry (1-0) was sharp in his second start of the season, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three. The Tigers' bullpen was tested late but answered the call. Thomas Kerby allowed a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly before Cade Miller and Camden Lyke combined to navigate the eighth and ninth innings.

Mississippi College threatened in the final frame, loading the bases with two outs, but Tyler Pierce entered and recorded the final out to earn his first save of the season and preserve the 2-1 win.

Offensively, Wilson and Wilkerson each collected two hits, while Alford finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Walburn also scored a run as part of the Tigers' eight-hit performance.

With the sweep, West Alabama remains unbeaten and gains valuable early momentum in conference play. The Tigers will look to carry their 10-0 start on the road Friday, February 20th against Auburn-Montgomery as the young season continues.
