LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Men's and Women's Tennis teams defeated the William Carey Crusaders, 5-2, at the Vaughan Tennis Complex on Tuesday.
Tuesday's match served as an exhibition for the Women's team while the Men's team (3-0) picked up their third victory of the year with their three-point win over William Carey (0-1).
"I liked how we competed today," said head coach Jeff Beaman. "Two solid wins for the Men and the Women against a team that's ranked within the Top-Five in NAIA."
West Alabama's Men's squad began the day, by taking the doubles point. The tandems of Afonso Portugal/Itaru Kikuchi and Sebastiao Vilas/Gabriel Garay won their matches handily to clinch the first point of the match for the Tigers.
In singles play, Garay held down No. 1 singles with a (6-3, 6-3) win while Tapia also secured a victory in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) on Line Two. Federico Iturbe took home a (6-3, 6-3) win on Line Four while Kikuchi rounded out West Alabama with a (6-1, 6-2) decision on Line Six.
For the Women, they began their match by sweeping the doubles point. The duos of Jenaila Prulla/Valentina Mutilba, Nanoka Kazama/Greta Zawels, and Alexa Milliam/Jian Ibrahim all took care of business to put UWA ahead, 1-0.
Ibrahim picked up a (6-3, 7-6) win on Line Two to kickstart singles play. On Line Three, Prulla won the first set and took an early lead over William Carey's Isabella Lechuga before Prulla retired due to injury. On Lines four, five, and six, West Alabama's Kazama, Zawels, and Theodora Stancescu all won their respective matches in straight sets to cap off the day for the Tigers.
West Alabama's Women's team is set to compete for the ITA Indoor Championships which is slated to begin on Friday. For the Men's team, they will gear up for three-game invitational in Tyler, Texas, beginning on February 27.
