Tigers Dominate Falcons, 71-50, to Set Up Possible Senior Day Clinch

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Thursday night, defeating the University of Montevallo, 71-50, at Pruitt Hall.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 12-12 overall and 10-10 in Gulf South Conference play, keeping their postseason hopes alive heading into Saturday's home regular-season finale.

UWA never trailed in the contest, jumping out to an 18-11 lead after the first quarter behind hot shooting from the perimeter. The Tigers shot 53.8 percent in the opening frame, highlighted by a pair of early three-pointers from Bellah Machen. West Alabama continued to control the tempo in the second quarter, extending its lead to 39-29 at halftime while shooting nearly 59 percent in the period.

The Tigers put the game out of reach in the third quarter with a dominant defensive effort. UWA outscored Montevallo 18-4 in the frame, holding the Falcons to just 2-of-17 shooting and forcing multiple turnovers that led to transition opportunities. West Alabama pushed its advantage to as many as 24 points and carried a 57-33 lead into the final quarter.

Jayda Bernard led the charge with a career-high 22 points on an efficient 10-of-13 shooting performance, adding five rebounds. Machen added 14 points, knocking down four three-pointers, while Nailah Mayes contributed 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. Shay Hunter filled the stat sheet with eight points and six assists, and Haley Nichols anchored the defense with nine rebounds and four assists.

As a team, West Alabama shot 53.6 percent from the field and assisted on 20 of its 30 made baskets. The Tigers dominated inside, scoring 50 points in the paint, and forced turnovers that resulted in 19 points. UWA also held a 38-26 rebounding advantage and received 18 points from its bench.

With the victory, West Alabama now turns its focus to Saturday's 2 p.m. matchup against Auburn-Montgomery at Pruitt Hall. The Tigers will celebrate Senior Day and have an opportunity to clinch a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament with a win.
