Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against No. 1 AUM in Montgomery

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Softball team swept their doubleheader against the No. 1 ranked team in the country, AUM, on the road on Friday.

West Alabama (11-3-1, 2-0 GSC) put together their best overall performance of the year on Friday, hitting .315 as a team along with four Home Runs. In the circle, the Tigers held No. 1 AUM (10-2, 0-2 GSC)to two runs and a .130 batting average to clinch the series.

"We are extremely proud of the way we approached today's games," said head coach Stephanie Defeo.  "Everyone was locked in from the first pitch to the last pitch of the game."

GAME ONE: UWA 5, AUM 2

Eleanor De Block got the start for UWA and pitched 3.1 innings.

In the second inning, the Tigers' offense got going as Kayla Morris launched a Home Run to left center, followed by Trinity Hatcher with another Home Run to left, adding two runs to the scoreboard for West Alabama. AUM responded with a two-run homer from Chloe Hollon, tying the score at 2-2 after two innings.

UWA regained the lead in the third inning when Ella Watson hit a two-run homer to center field, driving in Carolyn Cagle. This brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Tigers.

In the fourth inning, Jessica Rose scored on a single by Cagle, extending West Alabama's lead to 5-2.

The score remained unchanged through the final innings, with UWA maintaining its lead to secure the win. Ann Marie was stellar out of the bullpen, throwing 3.0 innings of no-hit shutout ball. 

Haley Shannon collected three hits, contributing to West Alabama's offensive efforts. Cagle recorded one hit, one RBI, and scored a run, showcasing her presence at the plate. Watson delivered a Home Run, driving in two RBIs and scoring a run. Morris also hit a Home Run, adding an RBI and a run to the team's tally. Hatcher rounded out the offense with a Home Run, an RBI, and a stolen base, making key plays throughout the game.

GAME TWO: UWA 4, AUM 0

Megan Roe got the ball in Game Two and blanked the Warhawks over 7.0 innings of work.

In the first inning, West Alabama took an early lead when Shannon walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cagle, stole third, and scored on a bunt single by Watson. Stanbridge walked, advanced to second, and was put out at home, but not before Watson recorded an RBI single. The inning concluded with a 1-0 lead for UWA.

In the fifth inning, the Tigers extended its lead. Trinity Brooks singled, advanced to second on a throwing error, and scored on the same play. Following a walk to Cagle, Watson delivered a two-run homer to right field, bringing the score to 4-0. The inning ended with West Alabama firmly in control.

Roe, delivered a complete-game shutout, allowing only three hits and one walk over seven innings, neutralizing one of the top offenses in the region to win the series for West Alabama.

Watson recorded a standout performance with two hits, three RBIs, and a home run, achieving an OPS of 3.500. Morris contributed at the plate with two hits, including a double, and an RBI.

"Our pitchers did their jobs and defensively we stepped up," Defeo continued. "Offensively our players did their jobs and made a lot happen today. We are proud of how we came together and fought for 14 innings."

West Alabama will conclude their series with AUM on Sunday with Game Three slated for 2:00 p.m.
