MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 11 University of West Alabama baseball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Spring Hill College Tuesday evening at Sims-Galle Field, moving to 12-2 on the season.
The Tigers battled back from a four-run deficit to tie the game in the seventh inning, but a pair of runs in the eighth proved to be the difference as Spring Hill improved to 8-7 overall.
Spring Hill struck first in the second inning, using an RBI double from Gavin Moran to take a 1-0 lead. The Badgers added three more in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double from Jordan Black and an RBI single by Jaylen Jones, stretching the advantage to 4-0.
West Alabama's offense came alive in the sixth. Rashad Robinson ignited the rally with a double to left before Nick Wilson drove in the Tigers' first run with a single through the right side. Later in the inning, Kyle Blevins delivered a clutch two-run double down the right field line, plating Wilson and Hudson Walburn to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Tigers evened the score in the seventh when Robinson tripled to left center and Hayes Alford followed with an RBI groundout to make it 4-4.
Spring Hill responded in the bottom of the eighth. After a leadoff walk, the Badgers regained the lead on a single by Black that, combined with a throwing error, allowed the go-ahead run to score. Jones added an RBI single later in the frame to extend the margin to 6-4.
UWA finished with six hits on the night. Robinson paced the Tigers, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double, and a triple. Blevins added two RBIs, while Austin Thacker recorded two hits in the contest.
Luke Clanahan made the start, striking out four over 3.2 innings. Beau Bryant and Nolan Phillips combined for three scoreless innings of relief, while Ryan Ladner (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs in the eighth. Spring Hill's Nathaniel Helton (3-1) earned the win with three innings out of the bullpen.
