LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Women's Tennis team opened UT Tyler's Invitational with a 5-2 win over Midwestern State while the Men's team fell 5-2 to the Mustangs.
The tandems of Greta Zawels/Nanoka Kazama and Shaira Rivera/Alexa Milliam secured the doubles point to begin the match for West Alabama's Women's team (5-2). Zawels and Kazama dominated, taking a 6-1 win while Rivera and Milliam scraped out a 6-4 win in Line One.
In singles play, Jian Ibrahim was the first to render a result, defeating MSU's Jasmine Crain (6-4, 6-4). Alexa Milliam followed that up and garnered the third point of the match for UWA with a (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) victory in Line Two over the Mustangs' Emilia Gyorgy. Jenaila Prulla and Kazama closed the show for the Tigers on Lines Five and Six. Prulla defeated Alessia Dolce (6-4, 7-5) while Kazama also took home a victory in straight sets, (6-2, 6-1) over Hattie Berend.
For West Alabama Men's Team (3-1), they suffered their first loss of the season, falling 5-2 to Midwestern State (3-2). Afonso Portugal and true freshman Maksim Goncharov accounted for UWA's two points in the match. Portugal picked up a straight sets win in Line Three singles (6-1, 6-2) while Goncharov won his match in three sets (2-6, 7-6, 6-4).
West Alabama will resume play on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with a matchup against host UT Tyler set.
