TYLER, Tex. - The University of West Alabama Tennis program ended UT Tyler's invitational, by sweeping Cameron University on Sunday.
The West Alabama Men's team (4-2) took home a 4-1 victory over Cameron (3-2) while UWA's Women (7-2) secured a 4-3 decision over the Aggies (1-3).
Head coach Jeff Beaman, who was not able to make the trip due to health issues, praised Assistant Coach Josè Oliveira and his team for the work they put in this weekend.
"This was a long weekend of tennis against really good competition," said head coach Jeff Beaman. "I'm very proud of the way we fought and how we stuck together as a team. Coach Oliveira did a great job of getting the team ready to compete each and every day."
MEN'S TENNIS: West Alabama 4, Cameron 1
West Alabama began the match, winning the doubles point after the duos of Federico Iturbe/Jacob Tapia and Gabriel Garay/Sebastiao Vilas claimed victories. Iturbe and Tapia won 7-6 while Garay and Vilas secured a 6-2 decision.
In singles play, Tapia handled Cameron's Noe Milliard, (6-3, 6-3) on Line Two while
Maksim Goncharov claimed a (5-7, 6-2, 7-6) win over Abubakari Yakubu-Lea.
Afonso Portugal clinched the match for UWA as he defeated Santiago Ledesma (7-6, 5-7, 6-4) in Line Three.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: West Alabama 4, Cameron 3
The Tigers took the doubles point in dominant fashion with Nanoka Kazama/Greta Zawels, winning 6-0 along with Jenaila Prulla/Theodora Stancescu winning 6-3.
Jian Ibrahim notched the first singles victory for UWA, defeating Adelaide Ismagulova (6-2, 6-2) on Line Two. In Line Three Zawels was victorious in straight sets, taking care of Alexa Garcia, (6-3, 6-3). Shaira Rivera clinched it for the Tigers in Line One as she took home a (5-7, 6-4, 7-6) decision over Jenna Goessel.
"Now it's time to get healthy and work on the things we need to improve on," Coach Beaman closed.
West Alabama will return home on Thursday for a 1:00 p.m. matchup against Murray State.
