LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama Softball team fell to No. 25 Montevallo with a final score of 5-3 at the UWA Softball Complex.
UWA (17-5-1, 8-2 GSC) managed a late push with two runs in the seventh inning but could not overcome Montevallo's (21-5, 6-4 GSC) 5-1lead that they built in the fourth inning.
Eleanor De Block got the start for West Alabama and was only able to throw 1.2 innings before being relieved by
Ann Marie Stanbridge.
In the second inning, the Falcons took the lead with three runs in the top half of the inning, capitalizing on two hit-by-pitches and a series of walks. In the bottom half of the inning, West Alabama's
Kayla Morris singled and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
ShaKeria Washington. La'Taviona Parke then delivered a sacrifice fly, allowing Morris to score.
In the fourth inning, the Falcons extended their lead with two unearned runs in their half of the fourth, resulting in a 5–1 score by the end of the inning. UWA had an opportunity to close the gap when
Ann Marie Stanbridge doubled, but a fielding error and a walk loaded the bases. However, the inning ended without further scoring.
The game remained scoreless through the fifth and sixth innings, with the Tigers unable to capitalize on any baserunners. In a dramatic seventh inning, West Alabama mounted a comeback attempt. Morris singled, followed by hits from Parke and
Jessica Rose, which brought in a run.
Trinity Hatcher then doubled to drive in another run, but the rally fell short as Montevallo secured the final out.
West Alabama will conclude their three-game series against No. 25 Montevallo on Saturday with a double header set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
