No. 6 Tigers Take Series, Sweep Doubleheader at Statesmen

CLEVELAND, Miss. — No. 6 West Alabama bounced back in a big way on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Delta State with 10-5 and 11-5 victories to secure the series win at Ferriss Field.

After dropping game one of the series on Friday, the Tigers responded with an explosive offensive day, totaling 21 runs on 26 hits across the two games.

Game One: West Alabama 10, Delta State 5

West Alabama set the tone early, plating runs in each of the first three innings. An RBI single from Nick Wilson in the first and a Layth Holiday RBI knock in the second gave UWA a 2-0 lead before Delta State briefly tied the game.

The turning point came in the third inning when Jack Buening launched a three-run homer to put the Tigers back in front, 5-2. Buening struck again in the fifth with a two-run shot, finishing the game with five RBIs.

Hudson Walburn added to the offensive surge, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, including a two-run blast in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

On the mound, Blake Westry improved to 5-0, allowing two runs over five innings. The bullpen combination of Jacob Marshall and Connor Gunnison limited further damage to secure the win.

Game Two: West Alabama 11, Delta State 5

The Tigers carried their momentum into game two, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Hayes Alford.

Alford stayed hot in the third inning, crushing his second home run of the game as part of a four-run frame that pushed UWA's lead to 6-0. The Tigers continued to apply pressure, adding runs in the fifth and a three-run sixth inning to break the game open.

Kaiden Jones delivered a key moment with a two-run homer in the fifth, while Kyle Blevins and Jones each drove in runs during the sixth-inning rally.

Alford led the charge with three RBIs, while Jones added three RBIs of his own. West Alabama once again tallied 13 hits in the game.

Colin Woodham earned the win, moving to 3-0 on the season, while the bullpen combined to hold Delta State to just one run over the final innings.

Series Secured

With the doubleheader sweep, West Alabama improved to 23-6 overall and claimed the series victory over Delta State. The Tigers' offense proved to be the difference, combining timely hitting with power throughout the day.

UWA will look to carry that momentum into its next Gulf South Conference matchup as they heading to Union University for a three-game series starting on Friday, March 27th at 5 PM.
