LIVINGSTON, Ala. – No. 8 West Alabama used a three-run second inning and a dominant performance on the mound to secure a 3-0 win over Tuskegee University on Tuesday afternoon at Tartt Field. The contest was called after seven innings due to rain, improving the Tigers to 26-7 on the season.
West Alabama wasted little time creating separation, capitalizing on Tuskegee miscues in the bottom of the second inning. After Diego Bryant reached with a single and Kyle Blevins got aboard, Layth Holiday delivered the first run of the game by reaching on an error, allowing Bryant to score. Moments later, Blevins swiped home to make it 2-0 before Rashad Robinson added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
That would be all the offense the Tigers needed as the pitching staff took control the rest of the way.
Luke Clanahan (2-0) earned the win with an impressive start, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six. The bullpen continued the shutout effort, with Cade Miller, Nolan Phillips, and Carson Tyree combining for three innings of no-run baseball while adding five strikeouts. Tyree made the first appearance of his UWA career as a pitcher after recovering from an arm injury that he suffered last season.
In total, West Alabama pitchers held Tuskegee to just two hits and struck out 11 batters in the game.
Offensively, the Tigers were limited to three hits but made them count. Hudson Walburn, Aaron Wallace, and Diego Bryant each recorded a hit, while Holiday drove in a run and sparked the decisive second inning with aggressive baserunning.
Tuskegee threatened late in the seventh inning with a pair of baserunners, but the Tigers turned a double play to end the game just before weather conditions forced an early conclusion.
West Alabama will now turn its attention back to Gulf South Conference play as the Tigers look to carry momentum from the midweek win into their upcoming series against Trevecca Nazarene, with a doubleheader schedule for Friday, April 3rd at 1 PM.
