LIVINGSTON, Ala. – No. 8 West Alabama Tigers baseball dropped the final game of its Gulf South Conference series to the Valdosta State Blazers baseball, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Tartt Field. Despite the setback, the Tigers secured the series victory after sweeping Friday's doubleheader.
West Alabama moves to 18-3 overall and 10-2 in GSC play, while Valdosta State improves to 7-14 on the season.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the fourth inning behind the bat of Nick Wilson. Wilson launched a solo home run to left field to give UWA a 1-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Will Wood delivered an RBI single to left field that scored Kyle Blevins, extending the lead to 2-0.
West Alabama finished the inning with four hits, but Valdosta State starter Drake LaRoche settled in from there, keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game while pitching a complete nine innings with seven strikeouts.
Valdosta State chipped away in the sixth inning when Brent Howard lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Parker Ladd to score and cut the Tigers' lead to 2-1.
The Blazers completed their comeback in the ninth. After a single by Ryan Strachan and another hit from Charlie Banks put runners on base, Jackson Webster lined a two-RBI single down the right-field line to give Valdosta State its first lead of the game at 3-2.
West Alabama was unable to respond in the bottom half of the ninth as the Tigers went down in order to end the game.
UWA outhit the Blazers 9-7 in the contest. Wilson led the Tigers with a 2-for-4 performance and his fourth home run of the season, while Wood added two hits and an RBI. Austin Thacker, Hudson Walburn, Kyle Blevins, Wayne Wilkerson, and Tanner Jones each recorded a hit.
On the mound, Blake Westry turned in a strong start, allowing just one run on two hits over 5.1 innings while striking out four and walking four.
Thomas Kerby was charged with the loss after allowing two runs in relief. Camden Lyke recorded the final out of the ninth inning for the Tigers.
West Alabama will look to bounce back as it hosts William Carey for a midweek contest on Tuesday, March 10th at 5 PM.
