LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The No. 17 University of West Alabama men's tennis team earned recognition from the Gulf South Conference this week as freshman Maksim Goncharov was named GSC Freshman of the Week for the first time this season.

Goncharov turned in a strong performance for the Tigers in their matchup against #5 Columbus State, finishing a perfect 1-0 in both singles and doubles play against one of the top teams in the nation.

In doubles action, Goncharov teamed with Afonso Portugal on court three to secure a 6-3 victory over Benedek Szombathelyi and Daniel Hammond, helping set the tone early for UWA. The duo has been a consistent force this season, with Goncharov playing a key role in multiple doubles wins alongside Portugal.

Goncharov followed with an impressive showing in singles, earning a straight-sets win on court four. He defeated Samer Al Tori, 6-4, 6-2, showcasing control and composure throughout the match to secure the point for the Tigers.

The freshman has continued to develop into a reliable contributor in the lineup, primarily competing in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions. On the season, Goncharov has recorded multiple key victories, including a three-set win over Southern Arkansas and a straight-sets victory over Montevallo, while also battling in tightly contested matches against regional competition.

In doubles, Goncharov has been equally effective, forming a strong partnership with Portugal. The pair has combined for numerous wins throughout the spring, highlighted by victories against conference and non-conference opponents, providing UWA with consistency in the doubles point.

Goncharov's performance against a top-five opponent underscores his continued growth and impact for West Alabama as the Tigers push deeper into the conference schedule.

West Alabama will look to carry that momentum forward as they continue Gulf South Conference play as they take on Christian Brothers on Thursday, April 2nd at 2 PM.
