PENSACOLA, Fla. - The University of West Alabama Tennis program swept their matchup against the Valdosta State Blazers in Pensacola.
UWA's fourth ranked Women's Team (16-4, 4-2 GSC) put together a clean performance over VSU (8-7, 4-3 GSC), winning 7-0. West Alabama's 16th ranked Men's Team (13-5, 5-2 GSC) defeated Valdosta State (4-10, 2-5 GSC), 6-1.
With the win, West Alabama's Women's Team has officially clinched a spot in the GSC Tournament.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: UWA 7, VSU 0
The Tigers began the day by winning the doubles point. Shaira Rivera/Alexa Milliam and Nanoka Kazama/Greta Zawels defeated their opponents on Lines One and Three.
In singles play, Rivera took a (6-3, 6-4) over Lena Beckx on Line One. Milliam was involved in a three-set battle with Milica Prokic, but pulled out a (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) victory. On Line Three, Valentina Mutilba won in straight sets, (6-3, 6-4) while Jian Ibrahim did the same on Line Four, (7-6, 6-4).
To round out the Tigers, Jenaila Prulla took home a (7-6, 7-5) win on Line Five while Kazama also won in straight sets, (6-2, 6-4).
MEN'S TENNIS: UWA 6, VSU 1
Similar to the Women's team, the West Alabama Men took the doubles point. The duos of Maksim Goncharov/Afonso Portugal took care of business on Line Two, winning 6-2 while Aaryan Khimasia/Ryan Robertson won by forfeit.
In singles play, Jacob Tapia, Afonso Portugal, Goncharov, Federico Iturbe, and Robertson all collected wins.
Tapia occupied Line One and won, (6-0, 3-6, 6-4) while Portugal took home a, (7-5, 6-2) victory on Line Two. Goncharov followed suit on Line Three with a (7-5, 6-4) win while Iturbe outlasted his opponent on Line Four, (4-6, 6-3, 6-1).
Robertson won by forfeit on Line Six to conclude the match.
West Alabama will be back in action on Monday at 2:00 p.m. for a matchup against Delta State on the road.
