LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama Softball team swept their doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern on Tuesday with a 2–1 victory in Game One and a 2-0 win in Game Two, extending their win streak to seven.
The pitching duo of Eleanor De Block and Megan Roe dominated GSW (17-29, 4-17 PBC) as the two held a .191 batting average and one run through 14 innings on the day, propelling UWA (35-10-1, 20-7 GSC) to a pair of low scoring wins.
GAME ONE: UWA 2, GSW 1
West Alabama struggled to get anything going offensively until the seventh inning.
De Block got the start in the circle and registered another complete game on the season, allowing one run in four hits.
In the third inning, Georgia Southwestern got on the board as Lani Dansby singled to left field and later scored on an Erin Garland double to left center.
De Block kept the Hurricanes' offense in check for the remainder of the innings, setting the stage for UWA's offense in the bottom of the seventh.
In the bottom of seventh inning, the Tigers' Ella Watson doubled down the left field line to begin. ShaKeria Washington then doubled to left center, driving in Watson to tie the game. Lizzy Austin, pinch running for Washington, scored on a Kayla Morris single to center field, as the freshman walked off the Hurricanes to propel West Alabama to a 2-1 win.
Watson contributed offensively with a hit and a run scored, including a double. Washington added to the scoring with a double, collecting one hit and one RBI. Morris posted two hits, including a triple, and drove in one run.
GAME TWO: UWA 2, GSW 0
In Game Two, West Alabama tallied eight hits, while Megan Roe delivered a five-hit shutout.
In the first inning, Haley Shannon singled, and Ann Marie Stanbridge walked, setting the stage for Washington's two-RBI single up the middle, bringing home Shannon and Stanbridge to put the Tigers ahead, 2-0.
Roe completely stifled GSW's offense though innings one through six, leading UWA to a 2-0 lead into the seventh.
Georgia Southwestern made things interesting in the seventh. A walk and two base hits helped the Hurricanes load up the bases with two outs. With the game hanging in the balance, Roe forced a groundout to secure a 2-0 shutout win for the Tigers.
Washington led the team with two RBIs, contributing significantly to the scoring effort. Roe pitched a complete game, allowing no earned runs across 7 innings, while recording three strikeouts. Shannon collected two hits and scored a run, showcasing consistency at the plate. Carolyn Cagle also added two hits, bolstering the team's offensive presence.
West Alabama will be back at home this weekend for a three-game series against UAH.
