LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Tennis Program's Alexa Milliam, Jacob Tapia, and Afonso Portugal were named First Team All-GSC along with the GSC's Women's Player of the Year, Shaira Rivera, on Wednesday.
Milliam earns her second consecutive First Team All-GSC honor after helping UWA reach the GSC Tournament and a top-five ranking in the country. Tapia and Portugal both earn the first All-GSC recognitions of their careers after guiding West Alabama's Men's squad to the GSC Tournament and a No. 16 National ranking.
In 2026, Milliam has played on Line Two singles and Line One doubles, accumulating 26 total wins. The sophomore ended the regular season with a 10-8 singles record and a 16-2 doubles record with her partner, Rivera. Milliam has been ranked in singles and doubles all season long and currently sits as the 19th ranked singles player and the second ranked doubles player in the nation.
The sophomore has been great in conference play, holding a 5-2 record against GSC opponents in singles and a perfect 7-0 record in doubles. Milliam has also claimed victories over ranked opponents in Midwestern State, Columbus State, and Valdosta State's Line Two singles player.
For Tapia, he occupied Line One singles and Line Two doubles throughout the 2026 season. The junior had accumulated 28 total wins this year, with 14 coming in singles play and 14 coming in doubles. On Line One singles, Tapia turned in an overall record of 9-1, solidifying his status as one of the top singles players in the league. The junior collected individual wins over three ranked teams in North Georgia, Columbus State, and Lee.
As for Portugal, he turned in the best season of his career in 2026. The graduate was named the GSC Player of the Week three different times in the campaign. Portugal served on Lines Two and Three singles and Line Three doubles. The graduate led the Tigers in total wins with 30, with 15 coming in singles and 15 coming in doubles. Overall on the year, Portugal concluded the regular season with a 15-3 singles record and a 15-4 doubles record to stake his claim as one of the top players in the league.
Along with Rivera, Milliam, Tapia and Portugal's honors, Federico Iturbe was named the GSC Champion Scholar Athlete.
Tapia and Portugal will lead UWA into the postseason as the Tigers are set to open the GSC Tournament on Thursday with a 8:00 a.m. matchup against Valdosta State. Rivera and Milliam will lead the Women's squad into battle against AUM on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
