TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 16 and third-seeded West Alabama men's tennis team opened postseason play in dominant fashion on Thursday morning, sweeping No. 6 seed Valdosta State, 4-0, in the Gulf South Conference Quarterfinals at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Complex.
With the win, West Alabama improves to 15-6 overall and advances to the GSC Semifinals, where the Tigers will face the winner of the matchup between No. 2 seed Lee University and No. 7 seed Delta State.
The Tigers wasted little time taking control of the match, starting with a strong showing in doubles play. The duo of
Jacob Tapia and
Federico Iturbe set the tone at No. 1 doubles with a commanding 6-1 victory over Valdosta State's Wilson Igbinovia and Emile Delporte.
West Alabama secured the doubles point shortly after, as
Sebastiao Vilas and
Itaru Kikuchi picked up a win by forfeit at the No. 3 position. The No. 2 doubles match featuring
Maksim Goncharov and
Afonso Portugal went unfinished with the Tigers holding a competitive position.
Carrying momentum into singles, West Alabama continued to dictate play across the courts.
Afonso Portugal delivered one of the most decisive performances of the day at No. 2 singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Shortly after,
Itaru Kikuchi extended the advantage to 3-0 with a win by forfeit at the No. 6 position.
The clinching point came from
Sebastiao Vilas at No. 5 singles, as he secured a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-3, to seal the 4-0 sweep for West Alabama.
Several other matches were left unfinished following the clinch, including a competitive battle at No. 1 singles where Tapia rebounded after dropping the first set and was in the middle of a tight contest.
Federico Iturbe and
Maksim Goncharov also had closely contested matches underway before play was halted.
West Alabama's efficient performance highlighted its depth and composure in postseason play, needing just three completed singles matches to secure the victory.
The Tigers will now await their semifinal opponent as they continue their pursuit of a Gulf South Conference Championship.
