TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 16 and third-seeded West Alabama men's tennis team saw its Gulf South Conference Championship run come to a close on Friday morning, falling 4-2 to No. 12 and second-seeded Lee in a tightly contested semifinal matchup at the Tuscaloosa Tennis Complex.
With the loss, the Tigers move to 15-7 overall and now await their postseason fate, with selections for the NCAA Tournament set to be announced on Monday, May 4th at 7:30 p.m. CT.
West Alabama opened the match with a strong showing in doubles play, securing the early 1-0 advantage. The tandem of
Sebastiao Vilas and
Gabriel Garay picked up a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while the nationally ranked duo of
Federico Iturbe and
Jacob Tapia battled to a 7-6 victory at the No. 2 position to clinch the doubles point. Lee responded with a win at No. 3 doubles, but the Tigers carried momentum into singles.
In singles action, Lee quickly evened the match following a retirement at the No. 1 position, tying the score at 1-1.
The Flames continued to apply pressure, earning straight-set victories at No. 6 and No. 4 singles to take a 3-1 lead in the match.
West Alabama found life at No. 5 singles, where
Maksim Goncharov delivered a resilient performance. After dropping the opening set, Goncharov rallied to win the next two, 6-2 and 6-4, cutting the deficit to 3-2 and keeping the Tigers within striking distance.
However, Lee secured the clinching point at No. 3 singles in a tightly contested match, as
Afonso Portugal fell in a pair of tiebreak sets, sealing the 4-2 decision in favor of the Flames.
Several matches went unfinished following the clinch, including a competitive battle at No. 2 singles where
Jacob Tapia had taken the opening set and was in the middle of a three-set fight.
Despite the setback, West Alabama showcased its competitiveness against one of the nation's top teams, highlighted by a strong doubles performance and multiple hard-fought singles matches.
The Tigers will now turn their attention to the NCAA Selection Show, where they hope to hear their name called and continue their season on the national stage.
