LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The No. 17 University of West Alabama men's tennis team and the No. 5 UWA women's tennis team earned a clean sweep of this week's Gulf South Conference Player of the Week honors, as two Tigers delivered dominant performances on the court.
On the women's side,
Jenaila Prulla was named GSC Player of the Week after a perfect showing in both singles and doubles competition. On the men's side,
Afonso Portugal earned GSC Player of the Week honors following an impressive stretch against multiple conference opponents, including a ranked victory.
Prulla continued her remarkable season with a 2-0 record in singles play, securing straight-set victories in both outings. She opened the week with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 win over Andrea Cano of Montevallo before following it up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Maria Duarte of Lee.
In doubles action, Prulla paired with
Valentina Mutilba to go 2-0 on the week, contributing to key points for the Tigers in both matches. The duo has been a consistent presence in the lineup, with Prulla now holding a 9-6 overall doubles record, including a 7-6 mark alongside Mutilba.
Prulla's dominance in singles continues to stand out, as she remains undefeated at 13-0 on the season, providing a steady anchor in the Tigers' lineup.
On the men's side, Portugal turned in a stellar week, going a perfect 3-0 in singles competition against Montevallo, Christian Brothers, and No. 9 Lee. He opened with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 win over Samuel Maia (Montevallo), followed by a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Juan Ycaza (Christian Brothers).
Portugal capped off his week with one of his most impressive performances of the season, defeating Jip Langerhuizen of No. 9 Lee in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, Portugal teamed up with
Maksim Goncharov to go 1-1 on the week, with an additional match left unfinished. The pair has been a key component for UWA throughout the season, compiling a 9-2 record together.
Portugal now stands at 11-3 in singles play this season while holding an 11-4 overall doubles record, continuing to play a pivotal role in the Tigers' success.
With both players earning weekly conference honors, West Alabama continues to showcase its depth and talent as the Tigers push deeper into Gulf South Conference play, going on the road today against Mississippi College at 2 PM.
