LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama Football program nearly swept the GSC Weekly Awards on Monday, following their 27-17 victory over Tuskegee on Sunday.
UWA took home three of the four awards, with Luther Richesson being named Offensive Player of the Week, Anthony Oatis winning Defensive Player of the Week, and Dakarai Shanks earning the Freshman of the Week award.Â
Richesson impressed in the first game of his UWA career on Sunday. The Quarterback led the Tigers offense with 308 total yards and three touchdowns. Through the air, Richesson completed 16 of 25 passes for 215 yards. The fifth year also showcased his ability as a dual threat, rushing for 93 yards on seven carries. Richesson's 93 rushing yards broke the Red Tails Classic record for rushing yards by a Quarterback.
Oatis was dominant on the defensive line for West Alabama. The senior recorded 5.0 tackles, 1.0 sack, 1.0 TFLs, and one forced fumble. Oatis recorded a sack fumble late in the fourth quarter which put a stamp on the Tigers' 27-17 win over Tuskegee.
As for Shanks, he showcased his ability to be a bruising runner against the Golden Tigers on Sunday. Shanks rushed for 62 yards on 14 carries, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Sunday's contest stood as the first collegiate game for Shanks after redshirting with Troy last season.
Richesson, Oatis, and Shanks will lead West Alabama into a strong road test against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, September 5 in Hickory, North Carolina.Â
