LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama men's soccer team dropped its home opener on Monday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Texas A&M International at the UWA Soccer Field.
The Tigers move to 0-1-1 on the season, while the Dustdevils improve to 1-0-1.
After a scoreless opening half, Texas A&M International broke through in the 59th minute when Aidan Williams found the back of the net at the 58:28 mark, with Michael Ochoche providing the assist.
West Alabama looked to respond and generated several opportunities throughout the second half, but the Tigers were unable to beat TAM International goalkeeper Nicklas Berg-Eriksen. Dan Nunez recorded three shots for the Tigers, including two on target, while
Ethan Sharpe added a shot on goal late in the contest.
With time winding down, Williams struck again in the 88th minute, scoring his second goal of the afternoon off another assist from Ochoche to give the Dustdevils a 2-0 advantage.
The Tigers finished with five shots, putting two on frame, while Texas A&M International recorded six shots with five on target. West Alabama goalkeeper
Dan Erez made three saves in the contest, keeping the Tigers within striking distance throughout the match.
TAM International held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The match was physical from start to finish, with both teams combining for 35 fouls and eight yellow cards. Texas A&M International's Isaac Santos was also shown a red card in the final minute.
West Alabama will look to bounce back on the road when the Tigers travel to face Middle Georgia State on Thursday, September 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Tigers' first road match of the season.
