CLEVELAND, Tenn. – University of West Alabama men's soccer fell on the road to Lee University, 1-0, Wednesday evening at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.
With the loss, the Tigers move to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in Gulf South Conference play, while the Flames improve to 4-1-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action.
West Alabama and Lee battled through a scoreless opening 45 minutes, with both teams creating opportunities in front of goal.
Lee recorded eight shots in the first half, putting four on target, while UWA registered six shots.Â
Ethan Sharpe put two shots on frame in the opening half, with both attempts saved by Lee goalkeeper Charles Carriglitto.
UWA goalkeeper Dan Erez also kept the Flames off the scoreboard, making four saves during the first half.
After nearly 78 minutes of scoreless action, Lee broke through when Simpson Moore found the back of the net at the 78:13 mark to give the Flames a 1-0 advantage.
Erez finished the match with six saves, keeping the Tigers within one late in the contest.
West Alabama generated several opportunities in the final minutes, including shots on goal from David Nunez, Oisin Griffin and Yabsira Cobo. Carriglitto turned away all three attempts to preserve the Lee victory.
UWA finished the match with 11 shots, putting six on goal, while Lee recorded 13 shots with seven on target.
The Tigers earned eight corner kicks, including seven in the second half, while Lee recorded four. UWA was whistled for 13 fouls compared to 15 for the Flames.
Nunez led the Tigers with three shots, while Sharpe, Griffin and Cobo each recorded two attempts. Erez's six saves matched Carriglitto's six stops on the opposite end.
Nunez received a yellow card in the 51st minute, while Lee's Ansel Ledezma was cautioned in the 82nd minute.
West Alabama returns home Sunday, September 20, for a non-conference matchup against Harding. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
