Justin Wright, a former Tiger basketball and football player, enters his second season as assistant coach of the West Alabama men’s basketball team.
Before joining Woodruff’s coaching staff, Wright was a Pensacola State College coaching staff member for five years, catching on at his junior college alma mater immediately after finishing his playing career.
In addition to on-court duties, Wright served as a PSC’s recruiting coordinator, which resulted in 13 Division I players recruited and signed over the last five years. He was also involved in player development and operating school-sponsored camps.
Wright was also the academic coordinator for the Pensacola State program, helping Pirate players in an environment where the graduation rate was 95 percent. He also served as the logistics coordinator for all travel, attire, equipment, the dorm supervisor for all student-athletes, and the housing supplies director.
As a 50 percent field goal shooter for West Alabama in 2014-15, he converted 45 percent from behind the three-point arc. An NABC All-District and All-Gulf South Conference selection in his only year as a Tiger, Wright averaged 16.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while scoring in double figures in 30 of 34 games with six double-doubles. Wright helped lead the Tigers to 22 wins in 2014-15, a school record for victories at that time.
In a single season as a defensive end for the football Tigers in 2014, Wright played in 11 games and recorded 17 tackles, including 4.5 for loss with two quarterback sacks.
Prior to coming to UWA as a graduate transfer, Wright played basketball at Troy University. He averaged 10.3 points per game as a junior before an injury cost him all but five games in what was to be his senior season as a Trojan.
Wright played two seasons at Pensacola State College, averaging 11.6 points and 5.5 rebounds as a sophomore on the way to All-Panhandle Conference honors. As a freshman, he averaged 10.4 points and 4.0 rebounds to earn a spot on the Panhandle Conference All-Freshman Team.
Wright earned his Bachelor of Science degree in social science in May 2014 and an Associate Degree in general studies from Pensacola State College in May 2011.
