Layton Jackson enters his first year as Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications at the University of West Alabama in 2023-24. He was hired on June 20, 2023.
Jackson has served at the University of the South for the last six years as Director of Athletic Communications. During his time at Sewanee, he was responsible for the promotion of the University of the South's 24 varsity sports.
“We are excited to have Layton coming on board at UWA,” Partridge said. “He brings a level of experience, job knowledge and work ethic that the Tiger family and fans will appreciate and come to depend on for news on the Tigers.
”We are also thrilled that he has an interest in, and has previously been, involved in campus life that is broader than athletics,” Partridge said. “He has also served on various campus-wide committees at previous stops.”
Jackson is credited with the implementation of video streaming at Sewanee and also paved the way for the University of the South’s community-led "Coffee With the Coach" shows live on Facebook, making the program available both live and on demand.
He recently redesigned the Sewanee athletic website, where he was responsible for both upkeep and content of the site. He also developed a day-to-day operations master plan for Sewanee social media that facilitated the entire athletic department in promotion of their respective sports, student-athletes and events with graphics and video.
“I would like to thank the search committee for considering me to be a part of a great athletic staff that is the one of the best in Division II,” Jackson said. “As I near the beginning of my second decade in college athletics, this is a great opportunity in my professional career to start this next chapter in Livingston.”
A Birmingham, Alabama native and Samford University graduate, previous professional stops for Jackson include Belhaven University and the Gulf South Conference.
“Nearly a decade ago, part of my requirement for my degree at Samford was doing a year-long internship. The Gulf South Conference gave me that start on the collegiate side of athletic communications,” Jackson said. “Now, after working the last nine years in Division III, it is awesome to see this come full circle. We have a great group of communication professionals in the GSC, and I am excited to join this group of people who work tirelessly to promote their departments on their campuses.”
In addition to his duties at Sewanee, Belhaven and the GSC, Jackson has served as the media liaison for nine conference championships and six national championships that cover a range of sports.
He recently completed a four-year term as the chairperson of the Sports Information Council for the Southern Athletic Association, in which he also served on the search committee for the league's Assistant Commissioner in 2022.
He has participated in several national committees, including All-Region Teams with D3football.com and D3hoops.com and the Associated Press Division III Football All-America Committee. In 2021, became an advocate for academic support by joining the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America® Committee.
