Tiger Women Defeat UAH 79-71

Lacey Griffin leads UWA with 20 points.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women's basketball team picked up its second Gulf South Conference win of the season with a 79-71 win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Saturday evening. Lacey Griffin led the Tigers (5-16, 2-2 GSC) with 20 points in the contest.
 
The 20 points for the Westville, Fla.-junior eclipsed her previous high of 13 points in the Red and White's season opener against Concordia College. Griffin connected on three of the Tiger's first five buckets in the outing. Her third basket lifted UWA to a 15-5 lead with 14:37 remaining in the opening stanza. Griffin concluded the night shooting 75-percent behind the arc. As a team, UWA shot a season-high 64.7-percent from three-point land. 

Keiara Middleton, Erin Courington and Latashia Greer also tallied double figures in the scoring column. Middleton chimed in 13 points while Courington added 11 points. Greer posted her third double-double of the season with 11 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds. 

UWA led by as many as 15 points in the game, but saw its double-digit margin drop to 56-49 with 9:23 left in the contest. The Tigers push the lead back out to 61-49 with fewer than seven to play on a layup by Larrenda Rockwell. The Lady Chargers again worked the lead down, this time to 67-65 with 2:28 remaining in the game. The Tigers wouldn't let the Blue and White any closer as the UWA toed the free throw and connected on seven of its final eight shots from the charity stripe to secure the win. 

West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 3 as UWA hosts West Florida in GSC action. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. A video stream of the game will be available at www.uwaathletics.com along with live stats.
