Tigers Open Gulf South Conference Season At West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men’s basketball team looks to halt and three-game losing skid as UWA travels to Pensacola, Fla. to face West Florida in the Gulf South Conference East Division opener. Tip off time is set for 7 p.m. at UWF’s Fieldhouse. The game will be aired on Fox Sports, WSLY 104.9 FM and at athletics.uwa.edu. Live stats will also be available. UWF will provide a live video link at www.goargos.com. The Tigers enter conference play 8-7 overall after dropping their last three outings to Alabama State, Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist. The Argonauts of UWF will start GSC play at 6-6 on the season. UWF, under the guidance of first-year head coach Bob Stinnett, topped West Virginia Wesleyan and Virginia State in the UWF Christmas Classic to close out 2009. As a cold spell enters the Southeast region, UWA looks to heat up from the field after only shooting 37 percent from the field in its last three games. Prior to the holiday break, the Tigers were one of the top-shooting teams in the GSC with a 48.6 mark. UWA is currently knocking down 46 percent of its shots, including 42 percent from behind the three-point arc. The Tigers are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per contest. The tandem of Richard Sirju and Jason Swanson has paced UWA offensively as both seniors are averaging 15 points per contest. Sirju leads the GSC in three-point shooting percentage (.563) and three-pointers made (3.27). The Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-native has scored in double figures in 10 of the 15 games this season. Swanson is one rebound shy of averaging a double-double on the season. Swanson ranks in the top 10 in scoring and rebounds in the GSC. The Troy, Ala.-product has turned in a league-best eight double-doubles this season, including back-to-back double-doubles against HSU and OBU. Following Thursday’s GSC East duel, the Tigers return to Pruitt Hall on Saturday, Jan. 9 against Southeastern Bible College. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. UWA bounced SEBC earlier in the season, 98-71, in Birmingham, Ala.
