LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football team returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 23 as UWA (5-2, 3-1 GSC) hosts Arkansas Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN 104.9-FM. Audio, live stats and video will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.
This marks the 17th meeting in the series between the two schools with ATU (3-4, 2-3 GSC) holding an 11-5 advantage. The Tigers snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Wonder Boys last season with a 35-30 win in Livingston.
UWA enters the contest riding a two-game win streak following an exhilarating, 40-38 homecoming win over Henderson State last weekend. The homecoming victory was solidified when
Deon Williams found a leaping Gerald Worsham in the back of the end zone for the game-clinching score. The TD pass was the 51st of Williams' career – further distancing him as the school's all-time touchdown pass leader. The Tuscaloosa, Ala. native threw for a season-high 388 yards and four touchdowns in the win while completing 20 of his 32 passes.
The game-winning catch by Worsham secured his second consecutive Gulf South Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor as the Birmingham, Ala. product finished the evening with 169 yards on eight receptions with three TDs.
On the season, Williams has thrown for 2,367 yards and 16 touchdowns. The senior signal caller is averaging 338 yards and ranks ninth in the nation in passing efficiency (160.98) and seventh in total offense (360.57). The Tigers are sixth nationally in total offense with 485.6 yards per outing and seventh in passing offense with 344.4 yards.
Defensively for the Red and White, Gabe Poe continues to lead the way. The Pheba, Miss. native has registered 64 tackles behind 45 solo and 19 assisted stops. The JUCO transfer is averaging 9.4 tackles per contest which is 30th nationally and third in the GSC. The linebacker is also second on the team in tackles for loss with six on the year.
Saturday marks Tech's first road game since its Oct. 2 contest at then third-ranked North Alabama and the Wonder Boys fourth of five road games this season. Tech is 1-2 on the road this season, including being 1-1 away from home in GSC play. ATU enters following a 35-19 homecoming win last weekend over Southern Arkansas in which Tech's defense held the Muleriders offense out of the end zone as they allowed just two field goals and 168 yards of total offense, including 24 yards rushing on 20 carries. SAU's two touchdowns in the game were scored on an 88-yard kickoff return and a 43-yard fumble recovery.
On the season, Tech's defense is tied for third in the league with 18 sacks, including picking up four sacks last week against SAU and they are fifth in the league with 48 tackles for a loss. Antonio Charles leads the Wonder Boys with nine tackles per game which ranks 35th in the nation.
Saturday's game features a battle between the two winningest active coaches in league in terms of victories as UWA's Bobby Wallace is the winningest active coach with 106 victories, while Mullins is the second winningest active coach with 88 victories.
Following Saturday's contest, West Alabama hits the road for the next two weekends. The Tigers travel to Southern Arkansas for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 30 and then travel to Florence, Ala. for a 6 p.m. start with North Alabama on Saturday, Nov. 6.
