Tigers Face Stiff Challenge at No. 18 North Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama football team hits the road for its second straight road contest as UWA (6-3, 4-2 Gulf South Conference) faces No. 18 North Alabama at Braly Municipal Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be carried on ESPN 104.9-FM. Live audio, video and stats will be available at www.uwaathletics.com.

Saturday marks the 63rd meeting between the in-state foes with UNA (7-2, 4-2 GSC) holding a 45-16-1 advantage in the series. The two squads are tied for third in the conference – a full game back of GSC leader Valdosta State and a half game behind Delta State and Henderson State. The Red and White will look for its first back-to-back wins in Florence in program history after UWA stunned the Lions last season.

The Tigers look to rebound after dropping a 30-27 overtime decision at Southern Arkansas last weekend – that snapped a season-long, three game win streak. All three setbacks for the Red and White this season have been decided for five points or less. UNA enters the weekend following a 31-7 victory at Delta State last Thursday. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak by the Lions.

The offensive tandem of Deon Williams and Gerald Worsham continues to pace the Tigers, which ranks sixth in total offense with 477 yards and eighth in pass offense with 329.

Williams, a Harlon Hill Award nominee, leads the Tigers as the Tuscaloosa, Ala. native has thrown for 2,919 yards this season along with 21 touchdowns. The senior signal caller is second all-time in passing yards at UWA with 6,561 yards – 128 yards behind all-time leading passer Brett Gilliland. Earlier this season Williams surpassed Gilliland in total offense with 7,267 yards. Williams also stands as the program's all-time touchdown pass leader with 56 – breaking Marty Washington's record of 40. Williams ranks fifth in the nation in passing efficiency (162.29) and seventh in total offense (351.44).

Worsham has proven to be Williams' main target this season. The Birmingham, Ala. product has hauled in 68 passes for 1,087 and nine TDs. The junior wideout is three catches away from passing Gerald Gales as second all-time in receptions and 105 yards away from becoming the program's all-time leader in receiving yards. Worsham currently ranks fourth in the country in receiving yards per game (120.7) and 14th in receptions per outing (7.5).

UNA enters with one of the top defenses in the country as the Lions are the nations best in scoring defense (8.0 points per game) as ranks in the top five in three additional defensive categories, including third in rush (66.2) and pass efficiency defense (91.8) and ninth in total defense (253). The scoring defense rank is second among all divisions in the NCAA this season. Courtney Harris pilots the Purple and Gold as he ranks 21st in the nation in sacks.

West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 11 as UWA hosts Valdosta State in the final GSC-TV Game of the Week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
