Big Inning Propels UWA to Win at Montevallo

Box Score

MONTEVALLO, Ala. –
A six run eighth inning propelled the University of West Alabama baseball team to a 13-9 win over Montevallo on Wednesday evening at Kermit A. Johnson Field. The win marked the fifth straight over the former Gulf South Conference East Division member for the Tigers (4-1).

After UM (1-4) fought back to knot the game at 6-all in the seventh inning, Kevin Deese provided the big bang in the inning with a two run homerun to right center that scored Brian Simone. Simone led the inning off with a single up the middle. Sam McCormack scored on a fielder's choice followed by Douglas Frazier crossing the dish on a passed ball. Dallas Rogers, who would become the final, run of the inning, scored Clint Brown on a double.

Jason Howell (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. Howell tossed 1 1.3 innings in relief allowing just a hit with a strikeout. The Mooreville, Miss.-senior was one of five Tiger hurlers to take the rubber in the contest.

McCormack led off the top of the ninth with a homer to right center, his second of the season. The Falcons attempted a rally in their final at-bat, pasting three runs on the board, but it wasn't enough to catch the Red and White.

The two teams each plated a run in the third inning but UWA took advantage of the contest with three runs in the fifth with a pair of runs in the sixth. The Falcons pulled closer in the outing with three runs in the bottom of the sixth before tying the affair in the seventh.

Kyle Butler took the loss for the Purple and Gold with two innings of work and seven runs allowed on six hits.

West Alabama returns to action on Friday, Feb. 12 as UWA hosts Georgia Southwestern in a four-game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The game will be available via live stats along with a video stream at www.uwaathletics.com
