LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama basketball teams return to Gulf South Conference activity against in-state rival North Alabama in Florence on Thursday, Feb. 11. The women's contest is set for 6 p.m. followed by the men's duel at 8 p.m.
On the women's side, UWA (6-16, 3-3 GSC) looks to improve upon its three game win streak and avenge 51-46 loss to the Lions on Jan. 14. Latashia Greer, who guided the Tigers in the previous loss to UNA with 11 points and eight rebounds, is averaging 15.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Sanqueeta Meardith led the Purple and Gold with 10 points and five rebounds.
During their three game win streak, the Tigers are spreading the scoring around with seven players averaging seven-plus points per outing. Greer leads the way with 10.3 scoring clip to go along with eight rebounds while Erin Courington and Larrenda Rockwell are each adding 9.3 points per game.
The Tiger men also enter the GSC stretch run riding a two-game winning streak after topping West Florida and Carver Bible College last week. UWA (12-11, 2-4 GSC) and UNA (10-12, 2-5 GSC) are in a tight battle for one of the four GSC Tournament spots. The Tigers downed UNA 78-76 earlier in the season in Livingston as Jason Swanson drained a three-pointer at the buzzer for the win. Swanson, who was tabbed the GSC East Player of the Week on Wednesday, leads the Red and White in the scoring column averaging 15 points per game and 9.9 rebounds per game. He posted back-to-back double-double performances last week to push his seasons total to 12 and 22 for his career. UWA boasts the top-two players in the league in three-point shooting percentage as Richard Sirju and Alquan Mendenhall are knocking down 48 and 45 percent respectively from behind the arc.
Following Thursday's game the UWA women's squad continues to Jackson, Tenn. on Saturday, Feb. 13 against Lambuth. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
